INTO Hofstra Virtual Celebration – Coping with COVID-19 Through Creativity
During a virtual year-end celebration on May 8th, INTO Hofstra invited international students to share creative projects that demonstrated how they were coping with the COVID-19 pandemic. INTO Hofstra, which started in 2019, helps international students with English language skills and academic and cultural resources.
Hanaa Wahba, Ed.D., the Program Manager of INTO Hofstra and Director of the University’s ESL Curriculum, said the “Create to Communicate Projects” encouraged students to express themselves through various art forms like film, poetry, graphic design, and music. The INTO students collaborated with faculty and four Hofstra peer leaders: Nadeen Yassin, Sonika Attri, Shelby Mitchell, and Evelyn Daniela Alas Moran.
The winners were:
- First Place: Junyan Chen, Wenjia Wu, and Sunrue Ye for their four-minute vlog, “Our Quarantine Life”. Faculty leader and advisor: Professor Wahba.
- Second Place: Aleena Ali and Hsuan-Hao Su for the website “INTO Hofstra Healthcare Plan for Immigrants”, addressing healthcare issues for immigrants. Advisors: Professor Wahba and peer leader Sonika Attri.
- Third Place: Shinichi Inaba, Tiantong Zhang, and Yongze Jiang for a song and timeline project “Heroes”, assisted by peer leader Nadeen Yassin.
